Christian van der Kooy (b. 1983, Goes) is a Dutch artist-photographer and curator, living and working in The Hague. His work consists of commissions for (landscape) architects and long-term projects that investigate the concept of public space. The keynote of his process is to consider our notions of identity and belonging, by depicting the poetry of everyday life. In his projects he explores the imagination through posing questions about our collective relationship with the land. Sense of place forms the essence of his narrative constructs. He is particularly interested in the interaction of people with the landscape; spaces of coexistence where a personal history generates cultural and social transformations.

The work of Christian van der Kooy is represented in permanent and private collections, and he has curated and exhibited in Melkweg Expo Amsterdam, Nederlands Fotomuseum and Het Nieuwe Instituut Rotterdam, Fotomuseum Den Haag, CID Grand-Hornu, Künstlerhaus Dortmund and RA Gallery Kyiv, among others.

His sizable portfolio of commissioned work includes city- and landscapes, museum interiors and exhibition views and, permanent installation works in public space. He is a member of DuPho, association of Dutch professional photographers.


NL - Christian van der Kooy is een curator-fotograaf uit Den Haag en studeerde af aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (2006). Zijn werk bestaat uit opdrachten voor de culturele sector en langlopende projecten waarin hij de cultuur-historische inrichting van het (stad)landschap en de openbare ruimte onderzoekt. In visuele essays reflecteert hij op de sociale omgeving en hoe deze van invloed is op het menselijk gedrag. Sinds zijn eerste bezoek aan revolutionair Kyiv in 2004, is hij op zoek naar verhalen waarbinnen de nieuwe generatie jongeren de Oekraïense samenleving op geheel eigen wijze wil vormgeven.

In 2018 verscheen zijn fotoboek “Anastasiia, She Folds Her Memories Like A Parachute” bij uitgeverij The Eriskay Connection, waarvoor hij in 2019 werd genomineerd voor ‘De Nederlandse Fotoboekenprijs’ in de categorie ‘Beste Fotoboek’.

Het werk van Christian van der Kooy is vertegenwoordigd in vaste en particuliere collecties en hij was curator en exposeerde in onder meer de Melkweg EXPO Amsterdam, het Nederlands Fotomuseum en Het Nieuwe Instituut Rotterdam, Fotomuseum Den Haag, CID Grand-Hornu, Künstlerhaus Dortmund en RA Gallery Kyiv.
